SEO Gets You Ranked. AEO Gets You Quoted.

The question moved before the click did

A business owner asks ChatGPT where to get a deck refinished. ChatGPT names three companies. The business owner calls one of them. He never opens Google. He never scrolls a results page. He never sees the business that ranks first in traditional search, because he never went looking for a list. He asked for an answer and got one, with names attached.

That’s the shift. People used to type a query, scan ten blue links, and click through to compare. Now a growing share of that same behavior happens inside a chat window. The AI reads through the top sources on a topic, works out what they agree on, and hands the person an answer instead of a list. If your business isn’t one of the names in that answer, the fact that you rank on page one of Google doesn’t help. The buyer never got that far.

Ranking gets you onto the page. Getting cited gets you into the answer. Those used to be roughly the same job. They aren’t anymore.

This is part of why the shift is confusing to catch. Your analytics dashboard doesn’t have a column for “mentioned inside an AI answer.” You can’t see when an answer engine weighed your page and picked a competitor instead. The only way to know where you stand is to check what comes back when someone asks.

Ranked and quoted are not the same job

SEO earns you a spot in the results. It’s built on relevance, technical health, and the signals that tell Google your site is trustworthy enough to show people. That work still matters. It’s still the floor everything else stands on.

AEO earns you a spot inside the answer itself, with your name on it. An AI answer engine isn’t scrolling ten results and picking the one with the most backlinks. It’s looking for a page it can read fast, understand completely, and quote from without guessing. A page can sit at position three in Google and never get pulled into an AI answer, because the answer engine couldn’t tell what the page was saying. A plainer page, built to answer one question clearly, can get picked over a fancier one that buries its point.

Same site. Different tests. You need to pass both.

What makes a page citable

Four things separate a page an answer engine will quote from one it skips.

Structure. Headers phrased as the actual questions people ask, not clever marketing lines. One clear answer in the first sentence or two under that header, then the supporting detail after it. If the real answer is buried under three paragraphs of setup, the engine moves on to a page that answers faster.

schema. Structured markup that tells a machine what a page is, not just what it says. FAQ markup, organization details, service listings, all labeled in a format software can parse without guessing. Schema is the label on the box. It doesn’t work if there’s nothing worth labeling inside.

Direct answers. Write the plain answer to the plain question first. Explain the reasoning after. Answer engines lift the first clear statement they find. If your first paragraph is throat-clearing, that’s what gets skipped, and your real answer sits in the second paragraph, too late.

llms.txt. A plain text file at the root of a site that tells AI crawlers what’s actually there and what it means, in language built for machines instead of search bots. It’s new plumbing, built specifically for how these tools gather information, and most sites don’t have one yet.

Why the fundamentals still carry both

None of that works on a broken foundation. Schema markup doesn’t fix a site that loads slowly. An llms.txt file doesn’t help if the pages it points to are thin, outdated, or contradict each other. Direct answers don’t matter if your business name, address, and phone number don’t match across the places where they’re listed.

AEO isn’t a shortcut around SEO. It’s built on top of it. The same groundwork carries both: a fast site, pages that say one true thing clearly, consistent business information, and content written by someone who understands what the business does. Skip that groundwork and chase schema tags instead, and you’ve decorated a room with no floor under it.

This is why we treat SEO and AEO as one service line instead of two separate invoices. Technical groundwork comes first. Schema and llms.txt come after, because they only work once there’s something solid underneath them to point to.

How we build it

We build sites on Astro, static-first, with code we own instead of renting from a page builder. That’s the foundation SEO and AEO both need: fast, clean, and ours to fix without waiting on a third party’s platform.

From there, we add schema, write direct-answer content, and set up llms.txt so answer engines can find and quote your business accurately. Because the same team that builds your site also shoots your video and runs your Meta ads, this work doesn’t get handed to a stranger reading a brief three steps removed from your business. The people who build your pages are the same people who understand what your business does and how you talk about it. That difference shows up in the copy: a page that merely describes your work, versus a page an answer engine can quote directly.

Quick answers
What's the difference between SEO and AEO?

SEO gets your page ranked in search results. AEO gets your business named inside an AI-generated answer, with a citation attached. Ranking helps people find your page when they click through. Citation happens whether they click through or not.

What is llms.txt?

It's a plain text file placed at the root of a website that tells AI crawlers what's on the site and what it means, in a format built for machines instead of search bots. It works alongside your regular pages. It doesn't replace them.

Do I need schema markup if I already rank on Google?

Ranking and being citable by an AI answer engine are different tests. Schema markup tells a machine what your page actually is, which helps that page get pulled into an AI answer even when it already ranks fine on its own.

How does Kreate Vision approach SEO and AEO?

We start with technical groundwork: a fast, static-first site built on Astro that we own outright. Then we add schema, direct-answer content, and llms.txt. We treat SEO and AEO as one service line because they share the same foundation.
